Cephalopds

Since June 2012 cephalopods were housed in a 3000 liter seawater aquarium in the bow of the institute ship for several years. The aquarium is divided into four compartments in order to possibly separate animals if needed since especially octopods are highly territorial. The cephalopods were being kept at the Marine Science Center in order to investigate their much vaunted cognitive and learning abilities. Furthermore, there are many aspects of their sensory systems that need to be investigated. After several years of vacancy, new animals moved into the aquarium in December 2023 to resume research in this area.
