WPM Biology of the senses

This module aims to provide a general introduction to the concepts of sensory biology, ranging from the evolution of the senses to the characteristics of individual sensory systems and sensory perception. By way of example, the sensory capabilities of individual model organisms will be discussed in their entirety during the lecture component and explored by the students during the practical sessions. The aim is to understand the senses as interfaces between the environment and the organism, and to explain how certain behaviours – such as orientation, navigation and foraging – are based on sensory information, in the context of the organism’s specific lifestyle and habitat.

Degree programme: Master’s in Integrative Zoology

         Semester: Winter semester

         Location: Institute of Biological Sciences

PM Basics of Zoology

In this module, the fundamentals of sensory perception are explored across four lecture sessions. Students also gain an insight into the work of the institute through the seminar and practical sessions.

Degree programme: Master’s in Integrative Zoology

        Semester: Winter semester

Venue: Institute of Biological Sciences, SR203

Research internship sensory biology and cognition

During the research placement, students will contribute to ongoing scientific projects and, in doing so, become familiar with the scientific background of the project as well as the preparation, execution and follow-up/analysis of the practical experiments.

Degree programme: Master’s in Integrative Zoology

        Semester: Winter semester

Location: Marine Science Center, Hohe Düne

PM Introduction to scientific working

This module aims to cover the fundamentals of academic research, writing and presenting. Following individual consultations, participants will then, as part of the practical component, write an academic text themselves and prepare and deliver an academic presentation.

Degree programme: Bachelor’s in Life Sciences

        Semester: Summer and winter semesters

Venue: Marine Science Center, Hohe Düne

        Dates: by individual arrangement

Seminar Current topics of neuroethology

This seminar features weekly lectures on current and emerging topics in neuroethology. Alongside the researchers from the Neuroethology Research Group, who are primarily responsible for organising the seminar, there are also regular guest speakers who enrich the seminar with fascinating topics.

Degree programme: open to all interested parties

        Semester: summer and winter semesters

Venue: Marine Science Center, Hohe Düne

Dates: if you’d like to attend, please contact Frederike Hanke by email

PLEASE NOTE: The seminar starts on time. Please arrive in good time (at least 5 minutes beforehand). The gate is closed during the seminar; unfortunately, it is not possible to join late.

WPM Bioethics

In this module, we cover the fundamentals of bioethics and facilitate discussions on current bioethical issues.

Degree programme: Bachelor’s in Life Sciences, Theology

        Semester: Winter semester

Venue: Institute of Life Sciences, SR203

WPM 12 Marine mammal research and bioacoustics

The scientific issues and methods of marine mammal research are explored both theoretically (lectures, accompanying seminar) and practically (practical sessions). Upon completion of the module, participants will have acquired a broad knowledge of marine mammal biology and will be able to assist in non-invasive behavioural experiments addressing questions relating to sensory and cognitive biology. Furthermore, the module provides both theoretical and practical insight into bioacoustics and its measurement techniques.

Degree programme: Master’s in Integrative Zoology

         Semester: Summer semester

Venue: Marine Science Center, Hohe Düne
